The Pinehurst Resort is one of the most famous golf destinations in the world, with 2,000 acres of golf featuring the work of golf course designers Donald Ross, Tom Fazio and Ellis Maples across eight courses. The most famous of the Pinehurst courses is Ross's #2, which was the location for the U.S. Open in 1999 and 2005.
In 2014 the USGA will try something new - both the men's and women's U.S. Open championships will be held on the #2 course, in consecutive weeks. In addition to eight courses of world-class golf, Pinehurst also offers the Pinehurst Golf Academy, three hotels, rental villas and condos, and a wide variety of spa services. Pinehurst isn't the cheapest place to play golf, but it's definitely high on any real golfer's list of "places I have to play at least once".
