You might think of Virginia Beach as the resort strip with a boardwalk along the Atlantic Ocean, but the city is actually a county-sized entity that's dominated by the presence of multiple military bases as much as it is by the tourism industry. Golf in Virginia Beach enjoyed a boom in the 1980's and 1990's - thankfully, the courses have remained intact. Most of the newest courses in town are located a reasonably short drive south and southwest of the resort area.
